Oh what fun we have had researching, selecting and buying the equipment. Julia and I have ridden many, many miles together, but owing to a physical power difference Julia is always working relatively harder than I am. When we get to the end of the day I am normally less tired than Julia. This is fine on a one days ride, or even a week's jaunt - but would not work over the course of 5 months. Our solution is to balance Functional Threshold Power (FTP) W/kg - not just body weight but total weight. The total weight we have to move is approx 185kgs (ourselves [140kg], two bikes [20kgs] and luggage [25kgs]. Our combined FTP is 500w. This equates to 2.7 w/kg. Therefore Julia's total weight (her, bike and all luggage) should be 71kgs (190w/2.7w/kg) and mine 114kgs (310w/2.7w/kg). This leaves Julia with 4-5kgs of luggage and me with 20kgs. So I have the joy of a fully loaded touring bike for 5 1/2 months and Julia goes bikepacking..... This is the equipment that we have chosen. There is another view to this - I have never registered an FTP over 168w. This is not fair!
